Better Summer Grilling

We just can’t imagine summer without grilling. The two words practically go hand-in-hand. Not only does firing up the grill beat the heat of cooking indoors, but it provides some flavors that you just can’t get inside. This week we will provide tips and recipes to set you up for a summer of better grilling.

The White Out Necklace… Ropes and ropes of translucent beads surround a cluster of baby drops. Wear it on the beach or out on the town. IH2

The Carmen Clutch… My mother was born, by mistake, in Madrid. My grandmother did not have time to get back to London. To celebrate, my mother was given the middle name Carmen, after a beautiful Spanish aristocrat, who ran off with a bullfighter. This clutch, available in romantic earthy tones, can be customized with interchangeable tassels. To be as unique and individual as Carmen herself. Open the clutch up and my good luck beetle lines the bag.IH3

The Ray of White Cuff… Gold and white are always smashing together, and this texture is really something special. It’s as elegant as can be, but with a bit of an edge.IH4-4

Over medium-low heat, stir the mixture constantly with a wooden spoon or heatproof spatula, scraping the bottom as you stir, until the mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon. This will be around 170°F on an instant-read thermometer.

Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl. Stir for a minute or so, until tepid then mix in the honey. Cover and chill at least 4 hours or overnight.

The next day, before churning, taste and add additional honey, if desired. Then freeze the mixture in your ice cream maker according to instructions.

Spoon the blackberry jam into the bottom of a container. Working quickly, spoon some of the ice ream into the container then randomly drop spoonfuls of jam on top of the ice cream layer. Continue laying the jam and ice cream then press a piece of parchment against the top to fill any gaps. Cover and freeze until firm, at least four hours.

We went on a holiday for an entire month! No work. No computers. No blogging. Just family and kids, laughter and sun. I wish it would have never ended. Sometimes it takes something as simple as spending quality time with my brother and our kids to realize that I need to take a leap of faith and change my life, because my children deserve to feel this happy each and every day of their lives.

Mommy is on summer vacation!

This morning my children awoke to find this sign nailed to their doors! I realized last night while simultaneously breaking up yet another escalating argument between a six and seven year old, trying to stop a three year old from catapulting off the sofa like Iron Man and making Chicken Tiki Masala from scratch, while the hubs obliviously was chopping up a fallen tree with a chain saw… that I’m on SUMMER VACATION!

Why should the kids be the only ones to enjoy these few months off from school? Why can’t I sleep in? Why do I have to play referee? Shouldn’t they make their own beds and tidy up their own rooms? So, I made a sign and posted it for all three children. The parental management of this establishment is on summer vacation. Now, I realize that this may not work, but the look on their faces this morning was priceless and for the last 5 hours there has not been any arguments, tantrums or demands.

On the lake

Life seems so simple when we come to the lake. Days filled with laughter, swimming, great food, good friends and the innocence of childhood.
